Background: Obesity a chronic disorder is gradually becoming a serious public health problem in many countries. The aim of the study was designed to measure serum lipids and lipoproteins as marker for cardiovascular disease among obese and overweight South Indian adults. Methods: The study was done between June 2016 to December 2016, in SRM medical college hospital and research centre, Kattankulathur which comprised of 270 participants of both gender in the age of 18- 55 years. 90 individuals with body mass index (BMI ≥25kg/m2), 90 individuals with BMI in the range of 23.0 to 24.99kg/m2 and 90 age and sex matched controls (BMI = 18 to 22.99kg/m2) were selected for the study. Serum levels of total cholesterol, Triacylglycerol, high density lipoprotein (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C) were analyzed by using auto analyzer Beckman Coulter AU480. The cardiac risk ratio 1 (cholesterol/HDL-C ratio) and 2 (LDL-C/HDL-C) ratio were calculated. Results: The difference between the mean values of total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL-C, were found to be statistically significant across the three groups. Positive correlation was observed between BMI and cardiac risk ratios one and two in both obese and overweight groups. Conclusions: Cardiac risk is increased in South Indian overweight and obese individuals which is evident from the elevated levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-C and cardiac rick ratio one (cholesterol/HDL-C ratio) and two (LDL-C/HDL-C)

Improving Maximum Data Collection Based On Pre-Specified Path Using a Mobile Sink for WSN

Data aggregation is one of the challenging issues which are faced in the wireless sensor network by using Energy Harvesting Sensors. Data collection in a fixed pre-defined path with time varying characteristic forms a major problem in Energy Harvesting Sensor Networks. In the proposed work the Adjustment based allocation method is used to allocate fixed time slots to each sensor nodes in which the network throughput can be increased with less energy consumption. The mobile sink transmits the polling message to all the nodes within the transmission range and makes decision based on the profits gained by the sensor nodes in each timeslot. The NP-Hard problem is defined with the form of reducing the complexity of the sensor nodes where larger number of data can be collected from the environment. The data collection throughput is maximized with the use of optimized path for the mobile sink in the network. This record was migrated from the OpenDepot repository service in June, 2017 before shutting down

The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of Nelumbo nucifera and Aegle marmelos on common carp exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of combined heavy metals (5 ppm) under laboratory conditions. The fish were treated with Nelumbo nucifera (500 mg/kg bwt) and Aegle marmelos (500 mg/kgbwt) for 30 days as a dietary supplement. The blood biochemical parameters of the fish were evaluated by analyzing the level of red blood cells (RBC), packed cell volume (PCV), hemoglobin concentration, glucose, cholesterol, iron and copper. The findings of the present investigation showed significant increase in hemoglobin (p<0.001), RBC (p<0.01) and PCV (p<0.01) of herbal drug-treated groups compared with metal-exposed fish. Conversely, glucose and cholesterol level in blood of common carp showed significant reduction compared with heavy-metal-exposed groups. All the values measured in Nelumbo nucifera and Aegle marmelos treated fish were restored comparably to control fish. Our results confirmed that Nelumbo nucifera and Aegle marmelos provide a detoxification mechanism for heavy metals in common carp

    No full text
Objective: More than 50% of the world's population is considered overweight and being overweight is associated with several comorbidities such as Type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, dyslipidemia, respiratory diseases, osteoarthritis, and depression. Therefore, in this study, we have estimated the high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels in obese, overweight, and normal body mass index (BMI) individuals and whether there was any relationship between hs-CRP and other risk factors of the cardiovascular system such as serum total cholesterol (TC) and other lipids. Methods: A total of 150 participants, divided into three groups. Group I - 50 participants with normal BMI (18–22.99 kg/m2), Group II - 50 participants who were overweight (BMI = 23–24.99 kg/m2), and Group III - 50 who were obese (BMI ≥25 kg). We measured fasting plasma glucose, postprandial plasma glucose, serum TC, triacylglycerol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and hs-CRP.Results: Obese individuals had increased hs-CRP compared with control (Group I) and overweight (Group II) groups. hs-CRP positively correlated with BMI and lipid profile. Conclusion: Elevated hs-CRP was associated with cardiovascular risk factors in overweight and obese individuals. This high-risk group should be targeted for therapeutic lifestyle modifications to prevent further complications
